Rev. Tim Selby: Methodist church welcomes all
December 31, 2013
I have read with sadness the recent news of trials occurring within the United Methodist Church.
Most recently, the headlines in many papers, including the Steamboat Today, have focused on the charging, prosecution and defrocking of a UMC pastor who performed the marriage ceremony of his gay son. UMC clergy are currently prohibited from performing same sex marriages, though there is widespread disagreement within the church regarding this issue.
The Western Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church has issued a "Statement of Gospel Obedience" that emphasizes Christ's grace and love is available to all and that The United Methodist Church is in error on the subject of "homosexuality's incompatibility with Christian teaching."
Delegates of the Western Jurisdiction voted to extend "extravagant hospitality" to all people.
I hope that all people feel welcome at the United Methodist Church of Steamboat Springs. I also yearn for the day that we will make headlines, not for our trials, but for the great work that our churches do make this world a better place for all people.
