Rec coordinator position eliminated

After five years with Hayden’s Recreation Department, Lindsay Heer no longer is recreation coordinator.

The Hayden Town Board, after an executive session Thursday, decided to eliminate her position as part of a transition that will turn the Recreation Department into a new Parks and Recreation Department.

A recreation supervisor, responsible for organizing recreation activities and events and managing parks, will replace the recreation coordinator position, Town Manager Russ Martin said.

“The intent is to do better and more with a parks and rec department,” he said.

He plans to begin advertising for the full-time supervisor position by the end of July and have a person hired by Sept. 1.

The Town Board decided now was a good time to eliminate Heer’s job and begin the transition because few recreational activities are scheduled, Martin said.

Heer, who organized events such as Summerfest, Huck Finn Day and the Cog Run as well as many ongoing programs, did not want to comment on her experience as recreation coordinator. She said she would not apply for the new position.

Two summertime children’s events, Wet ‘n’ Wild Wednesdays and Fun Fridays, are on hold until the Recreation Board today decides who, if anybody, will continue the programs, scheduled through the end of this month.

Pilates classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays will proceed as scheduled through July 23.

Eventually, the Parks and Recreation Department will take care of maintenance and other parks duties currently the responsibility of public works employees. The new department also will help the town meet growing demand for adult and children’s programs.

The Hayden Recreation Board will make a similar transition, overseeing recreation and parks issues, Martin said.
