Hayden — Less than two weeks ago, the Hayden High School volleyball team pushed a talented Rangely squad to five games before losing.
It didn't seem like the same Panther squad that showed up in Hayden on Friday night for the rematch, however. Hayden wasn't nearly as good, either, as Rangely stole the Tigers' homecoming thunder with a quick three-set victory. Rangely won, 25-21, 25-14, 25-13.
"We have to give a lot of credit to Rangely," Hayden coach Greg Johnson said. "They played great. They blocked great. They hit great, and they played great defense. There's a reason they're undefeated in our league."
The Panthers dominated the action all night, pounding Hayden's defense with kills that always seemed just out of reach.
They blew the games open early, especially the final two, and ran away to win without much drama.
"They were definitely a good hitting team," senior Morgan Bell said. "They hit the holes, the open spots, all night."
Even more frustrating to the Tigers, Rangely managed to throw up consistent blocks all night. That kept Hayden's hitters from ever gaining traction.
"We hit the ball pretty well, but today was the first day I thought we got out-blocked," Johnson said. "That's been a strength of ours all season."
The Tigers return to the court Tuesday with a game at rival Soroco. To be better there, Bell said the squad would have to be more focused.
"We're going to have to move our feet," she said. "We watched a lot of balls hit the ground. … I know this team, and I know they can come back from this."
