Poultry, swine highlight day of showmanship at Routt County Fair

Emma Meyer

— When Emma Meyer's family moved to Routt County three years ago, it was her first time living in the country.

"They had chickens already there," she said Wednesday after taking third in her heat during the 4-H poultry show.

Now, Emma said, she has 27 chickens and a rooster.

"I really like chickens," she said.

It was the rooster she was holding during the poultry show judging. On Wednesday, the Routt County Fair opened up with the 4-H/National FFA Organization poultry show. Children paced the small animal barn with either the chicken that was about to be judged or the rabbit they were excited to show off Thursday morning.

Emma, 11, had not only a rooster and a rabbit but two pigs, as well. Bruno and Mars were ready to be judged during Wednesday afternoon's swine show.

Emma, who's going into sixth grade, was able to catch her pigs' namesake (music artist Bruno Mars) in concert when he stopped at Red Rocks earlier this month.

Although Emma showed chickens at last year's Routt County Fair, this was her first year showing pigs.

Teagann Yeager, of Clark, has been showing pigs at the fair for three years. This is her fourth year in 4-H.

"They're pretty low maintenance," she said while washing two pigs — Tallulah, bright pink from just being scrubbed, and Shiner, a black pig with an even darker hue around the eyes — outside the Multipurpose Building.

That suits Yeager, as she also is involved in horse showmanship, as the gymkhana belt buckle showed, and often is busy with hockey commitments.

Last year, Yeager said, two of her pigs placed fourth and fifth in market, and she was able to sell one.

Tallulah and Shiner were proving much tamer than last year's animals, she said.

After swine showmanship, Wednesday closed with the FFA alumni fundraiser barbecue and an ice cream social.
