Popular swap meet for moms returns to Steamboat Saturday

Frances Hohl/For Steamboat Today

— Parents, pregnant moms, one and all … now's your chance to get rid of those baby and children's items you may not need. It's also time to pick up those things you may desperately want at the semi-annual Steamboat Moms Clothing and Gear Swap.

No cost.

No strings attached.

Just people helping people.

"I started going to this when I was first pregnant with my little boy," said event’s current co-organizer Lori Biagi. "It was a really good way to get started on the stuff you need to start a family."

There's no need to donate items in order to get items, Biagi explained.

The Steamboat mom swap began six years ago, and Biagi and Emily Conjura took over the swap in 2014 because the original moms who started the exchange moved away from Steamboat.

The semi-annual event has grown so popular that it's now become a two-day affair.

People are invited to drop off items from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Library Hall. Volunteers will then sort items by age, size and type. Then from 9 to 11:30 a.m. people can come to the library and peruse the donated items and pick out what they need.

Organizers said there will be a little more order than usual after receiving complaints in the past about line jumping and hoarding.

"You'll get a number when you get here and then go in numerically," Biagi explained. "The first hour there's a two-bag or two-box limit. Then after that hour, it's a free for all. We'd like everything to go."

Biagi says there's always a big need for items in the 3-year-old and older range.

"We usually have a lot of newborn to 2-year-old stuff. And of course the big items like cribs, gliders, swings … that stuff goes pretty quickly,” Biagi added.

During every swap, organizers have a donation box for a local family-based charity. This spring's recipient is the children's program at the library.
