Pilot & Today welcomes new editor, announces leadership transition
July 22, 2013
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Pilot & Today on Monday welcomed a new editor and announced a transition in leadership of the newspaper.
Lisa Schlichtman began her tenure as editor Monday. She comes to the Pilot & Today after more than 20 years as a newspaper reporter, editor, owner and publisher in the communities of Cassville and Monett in southwest Missouri.
"I'm thrilled to be on the job and part of the Steamboat Pilot & Today team," Schlichtman said. "I look forward to putting down roots here and working hard to ensure Steamboat continues to benefit from a strong community newspaper."
Also on Monday, the newspaper announced Suzanne Schlicht, chief operating officer of The World Co. and WorldWest LLC, would resume the role of publisher of the Pilot & Today. Schlicht will continue to serve as COO for the companies and make regular visits to their main offices in Lawrence, Kan. But she also will resume day-to-day leadership of the operations of the Steamboat newspaper. Schlicht previously served as the Pilot & Today's publisher from 1991 to 2010.
The Pilot & Today is owned by WorldWest LLC, which shares common ownership with The World Co. Other WorldWest properties include the newspapers in Craig and Payson, Ariz.
"My heart is tied to Steamboat Today, where I had the opportunity to be part of the team that built our daily newspaper and websites beginning in 1989. I look forward to working with our talented employees in Steamboat Springs to serve readers and advertisers in both traditional and innovative new ways," Schlicht said. "My priority will be in reconnecting with the community in a way that has been difficult with frequent travel to Lawrence the past couple of years. United Airlines is going to see less of me."
Schlicht was the Colorado Press Association's Newspaper Person of the Year in 2006 and is a past president of the association. She has been active in Rotary and is a past president of the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs. She also was the club's Rotarian of the Year in 2006-07. She has two children, Allison, 12, and David, 8.
As part of the leadership transition, Pilot & Today General Manager Scott Stanford has been promoted to the role of general manager of the Media Division for The World Co. Stanford assumes his new role in Lawrence on Aug. 20.
"The folks of Lawrence, Kan., will gain from Steamboat's loss of the Stanford family," said Schlicht. "Scott's forward-thinking, hands-on approach will serve the company's needs well in Lawrence."
