Phone scam targets First National Bank of the Rockies customers

Steamboat Springs — A phone scam requesting debit card numbers is targeting First National Bank of the Rockies customers.
Peter Waller, president and CEO of FNBR, said the scam surfaced Friday, and it involves an auto dial system that tells people their debit card has been deactivated and that they need to enter the number to reactivate it.
"As soon as we heard, we posted a notice on our online banking site," he said. An email blast also was sent out to customers Saturday.
"To our knowledge, so far," Waller said, "no one has been adversely affected."
One customer called the number back, according to Waller, but refused to give debit card information when asked.
If anyone did turn over debit card information to another source, they can call the bank directly to have the card closed and a new one issued.

Waller said customers are protected from fraud on their accounts.
"We got right on it," he said. "We were preemptive, and it looked like we acted expeditiously enough."
