Our view: It’s time to give where you live

When it comes to giving, Steamboat Springs and Routt County have a solid track record of stepping up and helping fellow community members in times of need. And there is no other time all year when that spirit of giving is on display more than on Yampa Valley Gives Day.

This year, Yampa Valley Gives Day, which is held in conjunction with Colorado Gives Day, falls on Tuesday, Dec. 5. On that day, giving to local nonprofits is in the spotlight from 12:01 a.m. to midnight.

Thanks to the efforts of the Yampa Valley Gives board and a host of volunteers, Yampa Valley Gives Day has become a day of celebration with representatives from local nonprofits waving "honk and wave" signs all along Lincoln Avenue throughout the day and an evening gathering where people and participating nonprofits come together to celebrate the generosity of our community.

This year, donors have over 80 Routt County nonprofits to pick from, and finding your favorites is easy. Just go online to YampaValleyGives.org and search by name of the organization, by county or by cause.

It's fun to have a list of nonprofits you support and then making donations to each by placing your gift amounts in a shopping cart. When you check out, your donations are divvied up between those organizations. It's also fun as the day winds down to watch a live ticker at the top of the website that keeps track of how much money Yampa Valley Gives Day has generated locally for nonprofits.

Since 2014, when Yampa Valley Gives Day began as a project of the Leadership Steamboat class in partnership with the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, nonprofits have benefited greatly from the effort. The goals of the organization, which serves both Routt and Moffat counties, are to grow philanthropy, strengthen collaboration within the nonprofit community, increase awareness of local nonprofits and make a difference.

Giving to local nonprofits on Colorado Gives Day has grown exponentially each year since the program began. Over the past three years, the number of local nonprofits participating in the day of giving has quadrupled and total local giving has surpassed $1.5 million with a whopping $731,991 raised in just 24 hours last year.

The Yampa Valley Gives Day theme is simple — "Give Where You Live" — and we hope you'll jump on board and make Tuesday your day of giving. It's a day when our community comes together to celebrate philanthropy and support the nonprofits that are an integral part of making our valley such a great place to live, work and play.

To be a part of Yampa Valley Gives Day, attend the Routt County YVG Day Rally from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Friday on the lawn of the historic Routt County Courthouse and then plan to go online to YampaValleyGives.org on Dec. 5 and donate to your favorite nonprofits. You're also invited to attend the celebration of giving, which will be held that night at Mountain Tap Brewery from 5:30 p.m. to close.

And in the spirit of the holidays, we hope you'll give generously.

At issue: Yampa Valley Gives Day will take place Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Our view: Plan now to donate to your favorite nonprofits on that day.
