Sean Ryan, also known as John F. Ryan, 49, passed away August 13, 2012, on Rabbit Ears Pass in Steamboat Springs.
He was born July 17, 1963, in Queens, N.Y., and grew up in Suffern, N.Y. After graduating from SUNY Oswego with a Bachelor of Science in industrial arts, he moved west to Colorado to get another degree and ski. He went to the University of Colorado Boulder, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in engineering.
Sean was joined in Boulder by Kim Luther, his college sweetheart. Sean and Kim were married on Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder in 1994. They lived in Boulder for more than 15 years and were blessed with the birth of their son, Kelly Patrick. The family moved to Steamboat in 2003. Sean's wife, Kim, is a special education teacher at Soda Creek Elementary School in Steamboat.
Sean worked as a finish carpenter and a builder of custom homes. He was a loving husband and father and was loved by many. His family and friends all knew that he would give the shirt off his back if asked; they always knew he would be there for them, asking nothing in return. He was a phenomenally talented woodworker, an expert and passionate skier, an avid extreme outdoorsman, an adventurist, an artist who loved the arts and grounded in the simple things in life: land, mountains and water.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Loretta Ryan, who passed away in May 2012 after a long battle with cancer.
Sean is survived by his wife, Kim Ryan; his son, Kelly Patrick Ryan; his father, John F. Ryan; and his sister and brothers and their families: Laureen Ryan and her husband, Paul Daniusis, and children Devon Daniusis and Ryan Daniusis; Keith Ryan and his wife, Marci Ryan, and children Shayna Ryan and Marissa Ryan; Matthew Ryan and his wife, Julianne Ryan, and children Nathan Ryan, Matthew Ryan and Colin Ryan.
Before passing, Sean provided some words of comfort to his family which included: Today is a new day, a new beginning. Be okay with the past and seek a positive future. Breathe deep, be healthy in body and mind.
A celebration of Sean's life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 19, 2012, at Yampa Valley Funeral Home, 2105 Blue Sky Way, 970-879-1494. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide at http://www.preserving
