Oak Creek plans long weekend of Labor Day events

— From Friday evening to Monday afternoon, you can't miss by heading to Oak Creek.

The town's Labor Day weekend activities span four days of family events, bands and games on Main Street and in Decker Park.

The theme this year is "Our Roots Run Deep," said Nikki Knoebel, mayor of Oak Creek and president of the Labor Day organizing committee.

Friday starts with a showing of "Oz the Great and Powerful" in Decker Park at dusk, and the pub crawl will be going through multiple Oak Creek establishments. New for the pub crawl this year is a stop at the art show, which continues throughout the weekend on Main Street.

The art show was started last year, as was the car show. The car show, which is scheduled for noon Saturday, drew about 50 cars last year, Knoebel said.

"We're really hoping that it's going to be bigger than last year," she said.

On Saturday, Main Street also will have food vendors, a beer garden, kids games and music.

The Oak Creek Coal Queen will be crowned at 3 p.m. Saturday. That night, a comedy show and music are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at The Colorado Bar. The cost is $20.

A new addition this year is the 5K No Fun Run on Monday morning. Partly named for the hilly course and partly as a tongue-in-cheek reference, the race should end just as the parade is getting ready to start, Knoebel said. The cost to enter the race is $20 and includes a T-shirt.

Spiro and Maria Callas are the grand marshals for this year's parade, which is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. on Main Street.

More games, vendors and family fun will follow the parade in Decker Park.

Most of the events during the Labor Day celebration are free because of the money raised by the live auction, which is 1 p.m. Sunday.

"We're looking forward to a great weekend," Knoebel said.
