Oak Creek man pleads guilty to animal cruelty

Zach Fridell

— A 27-year-old Oak Creek man pleaded guilty to animal cruelty Tuesday after reportedly running over a cat with a pickup March 7.

Chat Hettinger is scheduled to appear for sentencing at 10:30 a.m. May 26.

The punishment could include fines and mandated anger management.

According to a news release from the Routt County Sheriff's Office, witnesses said Hettinger, driving a red pickup, chased a black cat up the hill on Moffat Avenue in Oak Creek and ran it over. A passenger in the pickup reportedly confirmed the witness accounts and said the cat was a target because it was living in a nearby shop.

At the time, Hettinger said it was an accident.

"I was trying to run it away, and it must have stopped or something," he said.
