Monday Medical: iTriage, a doctor in your pocket

Patricia Moore

If you have a smartphone — and approximately half of the all mobile phone users have smartphones — take a look at iTriage, a feature-rich mobile app for health information.

Yampa Valley Medical Center has partnered with iTriage®, a free consumer health care app and website that helps people answer the two most common medical questions: What could be wrong? and Where should I seek treatment?

“Yampa Valley Medical Center is committed to providing the latest technology and resources to our community when they have a need for health care information and access to care,” said Karen McRight, YVMC Senior Director of Business Development and Marketing. “iTriage helps us connect with both our residents and visitors when they have an immediate medical need.”

Using this app, residents and visitors in Steamboat will have access to immediate health care information right on their smartphone or by visiting http://www.yvmc.org.

Based in Denver, iTriage was founded by two emergency room physicians, Peter Hudson, M.D., and Wayne Guerra, M.D., MBA. They developed the iTriage program to help patients learn more about their symptoms, diseases, medical procedures and medications, and then be directed to the closest medical provider anywhere in the country.

iTriage is available as a free download from app stores for iPhone and Android mobile devices and is accessible from any Internet-enabled device at http://www.iTriagehealth.com.

If a family visiting Steamboat Springs has a child who needs medical attention, all mom has to do is download the app on her smartphone and look up Steamboat-based pediatricians. She will see information on the physician’s specialty and education, phone number, office hours and directions to the office.

If you are a Steamboat resident who is traveling in another part of the country and need medical attention, you can look up the local hospital or physicians and their specialties in that zip code on the iTriage app on your mobile device. If you don’t have a smartphone or tablet, you can access the same information from the website, http://www.iTriagehealth.com.

iTriage allows users to find detailed information about any hospital or physician office including services, specialties, hours and directions. iTriage also lets you:

■ Research medical symptoms and conditions

■ Learn about possible causes and treatment options

■ Send medication refill and appointment reminders to personal calendars

■ Obtain health news and alerts

■ Access a nationwide database of every medical provider

With its Symptom Finder tool, iTriage puts a sophisticated medical dictionary at your fingertips. The core medical content on the website and the mobile app includes information on conditions, medications and medical procedures. This medical information was developed and reviewed by a team of clinicians who have extensive clinical and academic experience.

Recently, Harvard Medical School completed an extensive review of the medical content on iTriage and extended its stamp of approval.

According to iTriage, millions of consumers across the world have downloaded the free app, and thousands of health care providers use iTriage to reach and communicate critical facility and service information to patients.

“We are developing new ways of getting reliable health information to patients so they are able to make more informed choices,” McRight said. “We hope individuals will take advantage of this great resource.”
