Moffat County High School senior Lauren Roberts knows volleyball is a balancing act.

From riding too high or too low, a volleyball team can fall behind and a balance is needed, Roberts said.

On Tuesday night, that’s exactly what MCHS varsity volleyball did at home against Hayden High School.

“It’s a balance between having fun and being serious,” she said. “When we’re too serious, we get angry. When we’re just having fun, we don’t do as well.”

The Bulldogs (3-4 overall, 0-0 in the Western Slope League) were able to strike a balance to pull ahead and win the match, three games to none.

The way the ’Dogs did it was by having each others’ backs, Roberts said.

“All-around, I thought we played great as a team,” Roberts said. “What we did well was if you were out of it for a play, your teammates had your back. If you weren’t playing that well, your team picked you up.

“That’s huge, knowing that they’re there for you.”

The two teams appeared to be evenly matched in the first game, with Hayden racking up a 17-12 lead over the Bulldogs.

But, the Bulldogs weren’t going away.

MCHS scored 10 straight points en route to a 25-18 victory.

The second game saw the Bulldogs get out to an early 12-2 lead and never look back. A late Hayden rally would trim the score, but MCHS won the second game, 25-15.

Moffat County was able to keep the pressure on the Tigers in the third game, as the Bulldogs won, 25-18.

Moffat County head coach Sandy Camilletti said the Bulldogs switched up their playing style, which led to the victory.

“Our offense was much faster, which is what they have to do if they want to win,” she said. “They played better. We didn’t get down when it got tough.”

Moffat County was coming off a Saturday loss to Fruita-Monument at home.

“We needed this win,” Roberts said. “It helped our morale and our confidence.”

Hayden head coach Greg Johnson said Moffat County’s new, faster-paced offense and Hayden errors hurt the Tigers.

“I feel like we made more errors (Tuesday) than we have all season,” he said. “A big part of that was Moffat County was quick to the ball.

“We’re not used to that up-tempo style of offense. With our errors, it really hurt us.”

Moffat County’s attack was well balanced, Johnson said.

“We had errors with hitting, serving and serve-receiving,” he said. “I thought Moffat County played great. It was tough trying to get the ball down on them.”

Notes: The MCHS freshmen team won Tuesday over Hayden, two games to none, while the junior varsity squad fell, two games to one… Moffat County will enter the league portion of its schedule when it plays Friday in Palisade.
