MINIs in the Mountains arrives in Steamboat Springs

The MINIs in the Mountains will make its way to Steamboat Springs this weekend.

The 10th annual MINIs in the Mountains event arrives in Steamboat this weekend.

For all those Mini-acs out there, this will be the first year the event is held here with Steamboat offering a picturesque backdrop for the group rides and events.

Event chairman Jeremy Nelson said changing the location of the event offers a different dynamic for the drivers and each community the event travels to. In the past, Minis in the Mountains has been held in Winter Park, Copper, Avon and Snowmass. Nelson said the event will bring 500 Mini Coopers and up to 1,000 “Mini-ons” to Steamboat.

"In the mini-enthusiast community, there is not one car that looks like another," said Nelson. "We like to call it 'You-ification' and 'you-ifying’ your vehicle makes it unique. Other than rare exceptions, you won't see the same two Mini Coopers side by side."

Nelson said two events will allow the community to see the cars up close. There will be a group parade from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, which will take drivers from the Meadows Parking Lot and wind down Steamboat Boulevard, Fish Creek Falls Road to Lincoln Avenue. A MINIs Car Show will take from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday throughout downtown.

"I'm 6'6, and I fit into this car, comfortably," Nelson said. "There's more room in my car than other mainstream vehicles and that allowed me to not feel cramped in it. That's what initially drew me to this vehicle but also it's just fun to drive."

At the car show, classic models from the 1960s will be featured along with varying designs of decals, engines and other bells and whistles within each vehicle.

There will also be a judging portion to the event that will judge cars on criteria such as exterior, interior and overall theme of the car. A small panel of independent judges from the Steamboat Springs community will be assembled to determine which vehicles should be recognized in their respective categories. Trophies welded from a car engine will be awarded for first and second place in each category.

Around town this weekend, the cars can also be seen on group rides, a tradition of the MINIs event. Nelson said 11 routes have been established by volunteer ride leaders who scouted out the area over Father's Day weekend. One of rides is the "Dirty MINI Run" with engines revving at 10:30 a.m. Friday starting at the Clark Store and then following a few dirt roads that will take drivers through Routt County.
