Civil Air Patrol member earns honor at encampment
C/A1C Airman 1st Class Joshua Heald, of Steamboat Springs, was selected by command staff as wing honor cadet at the Colorado Wing Civil Air Patrol encampment Saturday at the Air Force Academy Prep School in Colorado Springs. Heald was chosen from more than 150 cadets from Colorado and surrounding states who attended the encampment, according to a news release. This is the highest honor a basic cadet can achieve at encampment.

Former service members reflect on news of US killing al-Qaida leader
President Barack Obama announced late Sunday that U.S. troops killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in a firefight in Pakistan. The news sent seismic impacts across the world, including Routt County. Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch, a Marine Corps veteran, said Sunday night that the search for bin Laden sometimes took a back seat for soldiers, mentally, to the daily duties of deployment in a war zone, but never went away.

Steamboat Springs High School graduate Bryce Mayo graduated Dec. 3 from the Naval Training Command (boot camp) in Great Lakes, Ill. His division graduated with Hall of Fame status. Mayo will transfer to Pensacola, Fla., for aircrewman school where he will prepare to serve as a non-pilot crew member on a Navy aircraft.

Army 2nd Lt. John E. Yager, a 2006 graduate of Hayden High School, recently graduated from the Armor Officer Basic Course at Fort Knox, Ky. Yager is the son of Monica A. Yager, of Hayden.

Army Pvt. Donald R. Dillon has graduated from the Fire Support Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. The field artillery specialists serve in intelligence activities including target processing in field artillery, cannon battalions, division artillery, artillery and maneuver brigade, and headquarters and fire support elements.

Steamboat native and 2004 Steamboat Springs High School graduate Donald Dillon recently graduated from his 9-week basic training at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Dillon is with 1/46, Charlie Company and now is stationed at Fort Sills in Oklahoma completing his AIT training. Traveling to his graduation was his mother, Fran Reinier, and family friend Dusti Henning. Henning was on his way to report to his hockey team.
