Memorial service planned Saturday for 2012 Steamboat grad killed in crash

A memorial service will be held Saturday for a 23-year-old man killed Saturday in a car crash.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said Michael Baumgartner, a 2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, rolled his car at Routt County roads 33 and 33B. The crash was reported at 2:55 a.m. Saturday.

Elliott said Baumgartner was partially ejected and killed.

Impairment was suspected as contributing to the crash.

“My heart goes out to his entire family,” Steamboat Police Sgt. Josh Carrell.

Michael and his parents Steve and Mellisa Baumgartner are well known in the law enforcement community. Melissa used to work at the Routt County Sheriff’s Office, and Steve was an officer with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Carrell said Michael spent a lot of time visiting with him in his office when Carrell was a resource officer at the high school.

“He was in my office all the time and just treated me with respect, and I just enjoyed his company,” Carrell said.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Internment will immediately follow the service at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery. A reception will be held at Howelsen Beach from 3 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hopes Promise in Michael’s name, 309 Jerry St., Suite 202, Castle Rock, Colorado 80104 or hopespromise.com. Memorial donations may be made at Yampa Valley Bank, payable to Ally Boglioli/In memory of Michael Baumgartner.
