Man arrested after crashing bike into police car

Steamboat Springs — A police pursuit in Central Park Plaza on Thursday morning ended abruptly when the suspect crashed his bike into a police car.
Steamboat Springs Police Department Capt. Joel Rae said an officer recognized Steamboat resident William Atanasu, 43, when Atanasu was riding his bike in front of Walmart. Rae said the man had a warrant for failing to appear in court and for obstruction of justice related to an incident last week in which police say Atanasu eluded arrest.
Rae said the officer tried to pull over Atanasu and that Atanasu circled the building on his bike.
The chase ended on the north side of the building near an alley, where the cyclist had a low-speed collision with the officer's patrol car, Rae said.
"He fully cooperated after the crash," Rae said.
The man was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center with minor injuries and then to Routt County Jail. The patrol car had a couple of scratches.

Rae said Colorado State Patrol was called to investigate the accident, and no tickets were issued.
Rae said Atanasu was arrested on suspicion of having the outstanding warrants, another obstruction of justice charge and unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, which Rae said was a seven-inch knife found in the man's bag.
