Losses end season for Hayden, Soroco boys

Hayden High School Tigers

— The season ended Monday night for both the Soroco and Hayden high school boys basketball teams in the pigtail games of the District 5 tournament.

The Rams went on the road to play at Rangely and lost 65-45. Hayden lost at Plateau Valley, 83-36.

Soroco was actually tied with the Panthers after the first half, 24-24, but couldn't hang in the third quarter. The Rams were outscored 29-6 there as Rangely blew the game open.

The game got away from Hayden in the second and third quarters when the Tigers were outscored 49-17.

Soroco paid the price this season for massive roster turnover from its 2015-16 squad, which competed to win its league. The Rams went 4-16 this season.

Hayden, meanwhile, continued in a long slump and finished its second consecutive season with an 0-17 record.

"We showed some improvement and promise across the board," Hayden coach Gerard Geis said. "We significantly increased our scoring this year and brought up our shooting percentage, but we're not where we need to be, not even close.

"They've never had any quit, which is encouraging. It would be really easy to throw their hands up, say, 'Whatever,' but I haven't seen that."
