Locals fare well in snowboard races

Joel Reichenberger

More than 60 snowboarders flocked to Howelsen Hill on Sunday, competing in a pair of United States of America Snowboard Association events in downtown Steamboat Springs. Local racers accounted for plenty of the day’s top performances.

Steamboat had four riders grab two first-place finishes each, winning their divisions in the day’s slalom and giant slalom events. Winston Vaughan was first twice in the Menehune boys division. Cody Winters was first twice in the Breaker boys division. Garrett Denney was first twice among junior men, and Dave Winters was first twice in the Kahuna men category.

Maggie Rose Carrigan was first in giant slalom and second in slalom in the women’s open division. Billy Winters was second and third in the youth men, and Luke Witcher was sixth in both races.
