Local 9-year-old boy dies of head injuries

— Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said Wednesday that a 9-year-old boy involved in a bike accident June 18 in the West Acres Mobile Home Park died three days later from massive head injuries.

He identified the boy as Jesse Alberto Grijalza and said Jesse lived with his grandmother in West Acres. The boy's ashes are being taken to Mexico, where his mother lives.

Steamboat Springs Police Department Sgt. Gerard Geis said Jesse was riding his bike with friends when he went over his handlebars and struck his head on the pavement at about 8 p.m.

"It doesn't look like he was wearing a helmet," Geis said.

Ryg said Jesse was conscious right after the accident but then passed out. Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters took Jesse to Yampa Valley Medical Center. He was stabilized and then flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora.

Ryg said an autopsy revealed Jesse died from a lack of oxygen to the brain caused by a massive head injury.

The Steamboat Springs School District has no record of Jesse being a student.
