Lisa Kirkland: What happened to democracy?

To the Editor,

I find it hard to believe that for the savings of a meager $10,000 in road maintenance, the Routt County commissioners voted yesterday to keep private a scenic road that crosses the Yampa River south of Lake Catamount.

More that 50 people in favor of keeping the road open attended the meeting. Those were supported by about 250 others who signed a petition also in favor of keeping the road open. Even the county’s planning department wanted the road kept open.

Are our voices ever heard? And, what fraction of the budget that the town spends each year does $10,000 amount to? Supposedly we elect our officials to represent up but do they? What happened to democracy?
