Lifelong Steamboat Springs resident Janet Russell dies from cancer

— Janet Russell, 42, of Steamboat Springs, died Tuesday of complications from cancer. Janet is the wife of Steamboat Pilot & Today photographer John F. Russell.

She was diagnosed with colon cancer April 5, and underwent surgery to remove the tumor the following week. During her recovery, she developed complications that required her to be flown to Denver on May 15. Janet spent the past month at Presbyterian St. Luke’s in Denver. She died Tuesday evening.

Janet was born Sept. 25, 1969, to Beth and Wendell Hicks in Steamboat Springs.

She is a 1988 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School and a 1992 graduate of Colorado College. She worked as the manager of the Routt Schools Federal Credit Union.

Janet is survived by her husband, John; her parents, Beth and Wendell; her sister, Katrina; her brother, Steve; and her children, Rylan, 14, and Sloan, 10.

A celebration of life is at noon Monday at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill Lodge. Walt "Tyg" Taylor will lead a brief sermon at noon followed by food and drinks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Janet Russell Memorial Fund at Bank of the West to benefit Janet’s children, Rylan and Sloan.
