Libby Meyring: Give coverage to fair

In 2011, when the USA Pro Challenge came through Steamboat, the Steamboat Pilot & Today extensively covered the event before, during and after the race. In contrast, during this same time in Routt County, the Routt County Fair was taking place, and the Pilot gave the fair very little coverage. In 2011, the paper instead chose to focus on the bike tour. Again this year, the two events will be happening at the same time. I think it is important to raise the question not only to the Steamboat Pilot but also to this community about what we value.

Let me tell you a little about 4-H and the Routt County Fair. 4-H teaches kids leadership, citizenship, work ethic and life skills. The fair is the year-end celebration for many youths who have spent months caring for their livestock projects. The culmination is the Junior Livestock Sale on Aug. 17, where their animals will be sold to the highest bidder. Many kids rely solely on these projects to fund their higher education. Without community buyer support, the potential for kids to lose money on their projects is real. In addition to the livestock projects, the fair offers many other fun family activities, home economic projects, events and educational opportunities for all ages.

Please honor and value the youth and agriculture roots of Routt County by covering and supporting the Routt County Fair.

Thank you,
