Lacrosse picks up wins
June 1, 2005
All three of Steamboat’s middle school lacrosse teams picked up at least one win during the Steamboat Classic Lacrosse Tournament held during the weekend.
Nineteen teams were in attendance, including talented groups from the Front Range, so the level of play was high all weekend.
“We could recruit some teams up here we could beat,” tournament organizer Neill Redfern said. “But it was good to see what really good teams look like.”
The tournament was divided into three divisions — sixth, seventh and eighth grades — but players as young as those in fifth grade took part in the Steamboat Classic.
Steamboat’s fifth- and sixth-grade team went 1-2, with the fifth-grade Patriots from Colorado Springs winning the division. Steamboat’s seventh-graders went 2-2. The sixth-grade Spartans of Aurora won, and Steamboat’s eighth-grade team was 2-1. Columbine Blue of Littleton won the eighth-grade division.
All three Steamboat teams avenged early May losses to squads from Edwards.

Redfern said the tournament was a success overall.
“All the kids coming up to Steamboat were loving it, and they had a blast from all I’ve heard,” Redfern said.
