Kounovsky-Lanning duo scores big in Sailors boys hoops win

Ben Ingersoll

— It had been three full weeks since Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball had taken to the court for a game, but the team was happy for the opportunity to erase the memory of a Dec. 20 loss with a Friday night win at Palisade.

Just before winter break, the Sailors fell hard against Glenwood Springs, 56-40, but rebounded nicely at Palisade Friday with a 55-38 victory. It was Steamboat's first league win of the season.

"It's tough to have a league game and have the kind of performance that we had (against Glenwood) and then have Christmas break come and have that lingering taste in your mouth," Sailors coach Luke DeWolfe said.

Steamboat's leading scorer Carter Kounovsky led the charge on the offensive end with 19 points, and Sailors’ center Garrett Bye stifled the Bulldogs on defense. Bye pitched in seven points himself, but it was the little things the big man contributed that meant the most, DeWolfe said.

"Garrett definitely did what we needed him to do," DeWolfe said. "He held their top scorer to just six points, and they all came in the second half. That was our main goal for Garrett. He also finished with 12 rebounds. Those are the kind of things we need him to do."

Bye's presence inside drew a lot of attention, so much so that DeWolfe said the outside shots were there for the taking.

Alongside Kounovsky's big night, Matthew Lanning tallied 17 points, and point guard Brody King chipped in six points off two three-pointers.

Steamboat jumped out to an 11-5 lead after the first quarter — a hot start DeWolfe said his team has been emphasizing as of late. The Sailors built a 25-17 halftime lead and pushed the margin to 42-32 heading into the final quarter. Some timely free-throw shooting in the final minutes helped improve Steamboat to 6-2.

Elsewhere in conference play, Steamboat got a little help from the same opponent the Sailors will face off against Saturday afternoon. Delta handed Glenwood its first loss of the season Friday, and Steamboat takes on the Panthers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
