Jon Cariveau places 2nd at USA Cyclo-Cross Nationals
January 10, 2012
Steamboat Springs — Jon Cariveau knew he would have a chance at the 2012 USA Cyclo-Cross Nationals in Madison, Wis.
And if it hadn't been for a late mechanical issue, Cariveau likely would have won his age division.
But as it is, Cariveau finished second Saturday in the men's 45 to 49 age division.
"I was a little bit disappointed in that," Cariveau said. "But second place at nationals, I'm happy."
Cariveau was the top-ranked rider in his age group going into the race.
It meant he was able to start near the front and stay out of the confusion near the back. Cariveau finished in 50 minutes, 8 seconds. Former Olympian and pro mountain biker Don Myrah was first in 49:10.
With the course experiencing frost, it softened up and became rutted out and muddy. Still, Cariveau was able to navigate through the ruts. At one point, he was trailing Myrah by 7 seconds when a mechanical issue with his bike cost him time.
"The course was very challenging," Cariveau said.
