Johnny Spillane paces US in France at 9th place

— U.S. Nordic combined skier Johnny Spillane had his best finish of the year on the World Cup tour, finishing ninth Saturday in Chaux-Neuve, France.

Spillane jumped to 14th place before making up time on the final two cross-country laps.

Billy Demong was 12th, Taylor Fletcher was 31st, Bryan Fletcher was 32nd and Nick Hendrickson was 41st.

The top three from Friday's Nordic combined event remained unchanged Saturday. Italy's Alessandro Pittin was first, France's Jason Lamy-Chappuis was second and Germany's Fabian Riessle was third.

The event concludes Sunday with another large-hill Gundersen event.
