Jim ‘Moose’ Barrows: A vision for the future

Jim "Moose" Barrows

After 60 years of living the bounties provided by Routt County, I would like to give back to this very special Yampa Valley community by serving as a county commissioner. Routt County has a very unique and special character that is the core of our existence. I have seen Routt County grow substantially, but I contend that the growth has not altered the character of the community.

Education and development provided by the Routt County community made it possible for me to graduate from the University of Colorado, qualify for the U.S. Ski Team, compete in the Olympics and World Championships and travel the world competing in World Cup and professional ski tour events. As head men's downhill coach for the U.S. Ski Team from 1977 to 1980 and as the 1980 Olympic team coach, I had to manage, coordinate and motivate athletes and businesses throughout the world.

A licensed commercial pilot since 1964, I have been involved in aviation development for Routt County for more than 45 years, including a term as president of the Yampa Valley Regional Airport Authority.

I have been an active licensed Realtor and member of the Northwest Colorado Board of Realtors since 1973. Combining real estate with my specialty ski promotions business created in 1983 based in Routt County and employing as many as 30 people operating at 21 major ski resorts enabled me to enjoy the cherished lifestyle available in the Yampa Valley. I was fortunate to acquire the ranch of my dreams (JASDIP) in 1977, the home for my family, horses and agricultural freedom ever since.

A major element of our Routt County identity is the enjoyment of unrestrained freedom. The ability to accumulate, protect and develop personal property and property rights, including mineral and water, is essential to our future. As commissioner I will commit to the continued preservation of this freedom.

Routt County and our residents own and provide several energy assets to the country. Development and promotion of these assets with timely and responsible management, consistent with state and federal guidelines, is critical to our diversified economy. The ski and tourism industries are the engine that powers much of what the world views and enjoys of our valley. Critical to the industry is the friendly Western image and our residents who actually "live the dream." It takes everyone from all corners of the county to sustain this dream. Many of our citizens have to wear more than one hat to be able to survive. It takes leadership and compromise to coordinate all these assets. I, as commissioner, will facilitate the opportunity for our residents to provide for their families and realize the benefits of this special place.
