It’s win and in for Rams at districts
February 24, 2017
Steamboat Springs — The season now rests on one game for the Soroco High School girls basketball team.
The Rams lost Friday in the Class 2A District 5 tournament, falling to Meeker 59-49 in the district semifinal.
The loss drops Soroco to the consolation game, set for 11 a.m. Saturday against Rangely.
A win would allow Soroco to advance to the regional tournament. A loss would end the season.
"We have to play hard," coach David Bruner said. "We didn't play hard tonight. We need to play with more intensity."
Soroco beat the Panthers 60-50 when the teams met earlier this season, but that was more than a month ago. Rangely 16-7 lost to Paonia in the other semifinal 55-31.
The Rams will need a better game Saturday than they came up with Friday if they're to pull out the win.
Meeker led by one at half 31-30 but built a lead in the second. Both Mattie Rossi and DaKota Bruner were in foul trouble throughout the game, and both fouled out early in the fourth quarter, making an already dire situation worse for the Rams.
"That took us out of our flow," David Bruner said of the foul problems. "We didn't take as many shots as we normally do. The pace of the game was not in our favor. They slowed the ball down a lot, and we looked a step slow. We looked lethargic."
It was a rough night for the Rams, but all will be well with a win Saturday.
"It's win or go home," Bruner said.
