In honor of upcoming reunion, 10 signs you were a Steamboat Sailor in the 1970s

Staff report

Steamboat alumni dance during a previous class reunion.

Members of any Steamboat Springs High School class that graduated in the 1970s are invited to attend The Last Waltz reunion Aug. 4 to 6 in Steamboat Springs.

In honor of the upcoming event, here are 10 signs you were a Sailor in the ’70s, courtesy of Terri Finney (’75) and Chuck Bailey (’76).

10. You had Mrs. Conlon before she had Freddy.
9. You remember when cowboys and hippies battled each other in the hallways.
8. You knew the Rabbit Ears Hotel when it was … well … the Rabbit Ears Hotel.
7. The Cave Inn was the first business you saw when you drove into town. It was not a
geological site.
6. You know that turkeys ? were code for tourists.
5. You remember that the historic 90-meter jump was made of wood and unfortunately wasn’t fireproof.
4. You have fond memories of cruising Main in your pickup or Willy’s Jeep.
3. You know that Adolph's was a place to go (in your pickup or Willy’s Jeep) for bonfires
and other "unsanctioned activities."
2. You skinny-dipped in the hot springs when there were no buildings, no fees and an
occasional sheriff’s raid orchestrated by bored deputies.
1. You remember wearing five pair of tidy whiteys to lessen the sting of the paddle from Mr.
Harris.

Organizers say the upcoming event will be the last planned all-’70s reunion for the school. Similar events have occurred every three years for the last 12 years, but this will be the last chance for alumni to get together as a large group.

The group will meet at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4 at Slopeside Grill for cocktails. On Saturday, alumni are invited to watch a Sailor alumni basketball game for ex-players and their guests. The Waltz will take place Saturday night, with a party under the stars at Steve Brown’s ranch from 6 p.m. until “the cows come home.” The weekend will wrap up with a pancake breakfast at the ranch from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Parents and teachers are also invited to the reunion. Visit steamboat70s.com for more information.
