Holiday shoppers guide to bazaars, arts and craft fairs in Steamboat Springs

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — As Thanksgiving dinner menus are fine tuned and holiday plans are made, get one item off the to-do list — holiday shopping.

Sometimes, it's the thought that counts. And sometimes, it's those simple gifts found closest to home that warm hearts most.

Whether we're ready or not, 'tis the season for holiday bazaars, and this week we've found the answer all those would-be Santas have been searching for – gifts made with a personal touch at the following markets and events planned throughout Routt County.

20th annual Work of Human Hands Holiday Bazaar

9 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Saturday, Nov. 18 | Holy Name Catholic Church, 524 Oak St.

In its 20th year, the bazaar will be larger than ever with 26 artisans locally made items including lotions, lip balm, soaps, pottery, scarves, jewelry, alpaca hats, antler art, bison leather products, Christmas cards, ornaments, dog treats, pot holders, art work, face painting, summer sausage, jalapeños, crocheted clothing and more. Diane Anderson, event organizer, said the bazaar is also a fundraiser to support organizations like Awaken, a nonprofit with the mission increase awareness and education of human trafficking and to provide housing and restoration for its victims, and Catholic Relief Services in which fair trade items from Uganda, Bangladesh, India, Philippines, Egypt, Peru, Pakistan, Kenya, Vietnam, Indonesia, Ecuador and Israel are sold. Some of the items include coffee, chocolate, baskets, scarves, jewelry, ornaments and holiday items, with 90 percent of the funds going back to the people who made them and 10 percent distributed to organizations helping local families in need.

Concordia's 34th annual Taste of Christmas Bazaar

9 a.m. to noon | Saturday, Nov. 18 | Concordia Lutheran Church, 755 Concordia Lane

Prepping recipes, gathering supplies and igniting their creativity, local artisans and bakers have spent the past few months creating handmade items to be sold at the 34th annual “Taste of Christmas” bazaar. Shop the assortment of crafts, breads, pies, jellies, fudge, jewelry, handmade ostrich eggs art, lefse (Norwegian flatbread), Christmas cookies and more. All proceeds from go to support local, national and international missions. Brunch will also be served. Brunch available for $8.

37th annual Yampa Arts & Craft Fair

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Saturday, Nov. 18 | South Routt Elementary School, 448 Main St., Yampa

The event features up to 80 vendors selling ceramics, jewelry, woodworking pieces, photographs, fine arts, quilts, stained glass, soaps and more. It’s sponsored by the Edith Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and is the nonprofit organization's main fundraiser. Lunch will be available, and Santa arrives at 3 p.m.

Lions Club Christmas Tree Sales

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. |Saturday, Nov. 18 | Christy Sports Central Park Plaza, 1835 Central Park Dr.

The Steamboat Lions Club's annual Christmas tree stands are at Christy Sports in Central Park Plaza. The stands sell a variety of Christmas trees, including some as tall as 25 feet. Proceeds from tree sales go to a variety of local programs.

Write Your Own Holiday Story with Author Dagny McKinley

Noon to 2 p.m. | Saturday, Nov. 18 | Depot Arts Center, 1001 13th St.

Concoct a hero and villain in worlds of snow and glitter. Let your imagination run wild as you craft your own unique holiday story.

Small Business Saturday 

8 a.m. | Saturday, Nov. 25 | Lincoln Avenue, downtown Steamboat Springs

As part of the national movement to shop local, Celebrate Steamboat’s own small businesses this holiday season. People are encouraged to kick off the holidays by shopping at small business on Small Business Saturday, which also gives shoppers the chance to see what stores have available this season.

Holidays in the Rockies Artisan Market

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Saturday, Dec. 2 | Strawberry Park Elementary, 39620 Amethyst St.

Shop for handmade, one-of-a-kind gifts at the Steamboat Springs Arts Council's annual Holidays in the Rockies Artisan Market. More than 50 local and regional vendors will display their favorite holiday crafts. The community fundraising event will also include live music, photos with Santa between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. along with refreshments.  The event is free and open to the public.

3rd annual Holiday Ornament & Card Workshop

Noon to 3 p.m. | Monday, Dec. 11 | Depot Art Center, 1001 13th St

Don't worry about whether or not you have artistic talent. Everyone will walk out of the workshop with something worth keeping or giving to someone they love. The workshop is hosted by local artists Susan Oehme and Candice Jones. The cost of $25 includes all supplies. Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Drop-ins welcome or register ahead of time at SteamboatArts.org.
