Health briefs: Community health fair kicks off anti-drug campaign

Steamboat Springs — A free community health fair titled “A Healthy Life is My Choice” is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Boys & Girls Club of Steamboat Springs, 325 Seventh St.
The event features a kickoff to Red Ribbon Week, which promotes a drug-free lifestyle.
Featured speakers include Dr. Michelle Jimerson, personal trainer Rebecca Heath, nutritionist Alisha McLeod, Grand Futures Prevention Coalition’s Kate Elkins and Olympian Nelson Carmichael.
Attendees can sign a pledge to be drug-free and pick up a red ribbon. There also will be raffle prizes and giveaways.
Ski fitness class begins Monday
SportsMed at Yampa Valley Medical Center hosts a ski fitness class beginning Monday. The class continues from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Nov. 20 for a total of 10 sessions. The cost is $105. Call 970-871-2500 to register.
Health workshop meets Tuesdays
The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is hosting a six-week Better Choices, Better Health workshop on Tuesdays through Nov. 19. The free workshop will focus on nutrition, physical activity, stress management, self-management of chronic conditions, caregiver support and more. Health insurance marketplace meetings scheduled
The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is hosting a series of free information sessions to answer questions about the new health insurance marketplace, Connect for Health Colorado. A health coverage guide will attend the meetings for individuals, families and small-business owners interested in learning about their options for health insurance under new the legislation. The meeting dates are as follows:
Monday: 1 to 3 p.m. at LIFT-UP of Routt County, 2125 Curve Court
Tuesday: 4 to 6 p.m. at Steamboat Springs High School, 45 Maple St.
Oct. 28: 3 to 6 p.m. at Hayden Town Hall, 178 W. Jefferson Ave.
Nov. 6: 4 to 6 p.m. at Hayden Valley Elementary School, 300 Breeze Basin Blvd.
Nov. 7: 4 to 6 p.m. at Hayden High School, 495 W. Jefferson Ave.

Open enrollment for Medicare Part D lasts through Dec. 7
Open enrollment for Medicare Part D is from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries are able to change plans during this time. Seniors should review their prescription drug plan and make sure it works with the prescriptions they are taking, said Betsy Packer, Routt County Council on Aging's counselor and coordinator for the Colorado State Health Insurance Assistance Program.
The following open enrollment meetings will be held in Routt County:
Monday: 1 to 2 p.m. at South Routt Community Center, 227 Dodge Ave.
Oct. 28: 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Bud Werner Memorial Library, 1289 Lincoln Ave.
Nov. 6: 4 to 7 p.m. at Hayden Public Library, 220 E. Jefferson St.
Nov. 14: 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Bud Werner Memorial Library

Natural Grocers hosts series of educational health classes
Natural Grocers is hosting a series of free educational classes in October that focus on nutrition and health. The class dates are as follows:
Monday: A cooking demonstration from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. is for children ages 4 to 8 and a parent to learn about how to use healthy food to write about imaginary animals.
Oct. 24: A cooking demonstration at 6 p.m. features quick and delicious breakfast ideas.
Oct. 30: Learn ways to reduce your risk of breast cancer as well as learn about risk factors and risk assessing thermal imaging.
