Health briefs: 6-week workshop to focus on meditation, relaxation

Marchele McCarthy is offering a six-week workshop called “Finding Freedom from Old Habits and Negative Emotions,” starting March 5 and continuing on Wednesday evenings through April 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The workshop will focus on meditation, relaxation, and other mindfulness techniques to work with difficult emotions and habitual patterns.

Casey’s Pond Senior Living hosts free seminar, luncheon

Casey’s Pond Senior Living is hosting an “Active Longevity in our Elder Years” seminar and luncheon. The event is free and is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Life Room.

The seminar will talk about physical fitness, mental stimulation and social interaction to keep the older generation feeling young and healthy. Join a panel of aging experts to learn more about living long and healthier lives are we age beyond 75.

Teen Council offers Zumba, yoga classes for high school students

Teen Council offers Zumba and yoga classes at Sundance Studio at a discount for high school students to try and increase physical fitness opportunities. The cost is $5 per session, and they are being offered Wednesday. Zumba starts at 4:15 p.m. and yoga is at 5:15 p.m.

VNA offers free blood pressure checks for National Heart Month

In honor of National Heart Month, the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association will offer free blood pressure checks and free body mass index calculations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101 in Steamboat Springs, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at 745 Russell St. in Craig. Health insurance marketplace meetings scheduled

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is hosting a series of free information sessions to answer questions about the new health insurance marketplace, Connect for Health Colorado. A health coverage guide will attend the meetings for individuals, families and small-business owners interested in learning about their options for health insurance under new the legislation. The meeting dates are as follows:

• LIFT-UP of Routt County: 1 to 3 p.m. Monday and Feb. 24

• Bud Werner Memorial Library: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday and Feb. 21 and 28

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association’s Community Health Center is offering low-cost birth control, STD screenings (for men and women), pap smears, breast exams and general women’s health care based on income. LiveWell program to help families with healthy eating

LiveWell Northwest Colorado is helping families be healthy by working to improve eating habits and to be more physically active through the “Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0” program. The program sets the goal each day of eating five or more fruits and vegetables, watching two or fewer hours of TV, getting an hour or more of physical activity and drinking zero sugary drinks. Winter Blast Triathlon Series continues Feb. 28

The Winter Blast Triathlon Series at the Old Town Hot Springs continues Feb. 28 and March 28. The triathlon starts in the pool, heads up to the spin bikes and then to the treadmills. The cost for members is $30 per event and $80 for the series, and the cost for nonmembers is $40 per event or $110 for the series. Participants ages 12 to 15 must be with an adult. • A bereavement support group meets from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Rollingstone Respite House. The group is open to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Call 970-871-7628 prior to attending your first meeting.

HPV vaccine offered through VNA

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. Protect yourself or your family from cancers caused by HPV for just $21.50 for uninsured and underinsured individuals. The HPV vaccine is for ages 9 to 26 for males and females.

Planned Parenthood can help with costs of exam
