Haymaker Golf Course in Steamboat offers new programs

Luke Graham

— As the number of golfers across the country steadily has decreased, Haymaker Golf Course has felt the pinch.

Resident and nonresident rounds have been down following a national trend, but Haymaker isn't just sitting back. The course is planning on growing the game and its brand with residents, nonresidents and juniors.

"We want to make residents or guests think of Haymaker and Steamboat as a destination rather than just a golf course," said Luke Brosterhous, Haymaker's director of instruction. "And with the amount of kids and the amount of athletic-minded families, there is no reason this area can't be one of the foremost producers for golfers."

Haymaker has made several changes and will continue several programs from the past year.

The biggest change comes in the Haymaker Golf Academy and a newly designed driving range.

The course built a 2,500-square-foot area right of the driving range that will serve solely for lessons.

The result, Brosterhous said, will leave more spots open on the range for people and give Haymaker a place to host its golf schools.

The course plans to continue its Thursday Night with the Pros and is adding Technology Tuesdays and Golf 101 clinics.

Brosterhous also will have three two-day golf schools throughout the summer designed for residents and visitors.

The course also will continue its Junior Golf Academy programs, including the Little Gamers clinics for 4- and 5-year-olds, and will have two four-week camps that meet twice a week.

New this year is the Luke Brosterhous Junior Performance Academy. It's a year-round program designed to facilitate the goals of competitive junior golfers.

"We want to introduce the game in a good fashion," Brosterhous said.
