Hayden wrestlers have a big day, to send 7 to state

Steamboat Springs — Hayden High School wrestling coach Chad Jones admitted Saturday evening that even he was a little taken aback by the developments earlier in the day at the regional wrestling meet at Grand Junction Central High School.
Jones expected some of his Tigers to qualify for the state meet, but not necessarily the seven wrestlers Hayden will end up sending to Denver later this week.
"Honestly, I didn't think we'd quite get seven," Jones said. "But we're sending seven and that feels good."
The Tigers also have three regional champions. T-Lane Mazzola won at 126 pounds, Chad Terry was victorious at 145 pounds, and Ryan Domson took the title at 182 pounds.
Domson was the most impressive, downing top-ranked Morgan Rieder, from Paonia.
Also qualifying for state for Hayden were Kent Miller (third at 113 pounds), Kaiden Decker (fourth at 120 pounds), Journey Vreeman (third at 132 pounds) and Nick Williams (second at 138 pounds).
Decker finished fourth but had to have a wrestle-back to qualify.
"We try to tell them they've been wrestling tournaments since they were young," Jones said. "It really is just another tour even though there is a lot on the line. They still had to get after the kids."
Hayden most likely will head to state Wednesday evening. The event begins Thursday in Denver.
"We got a legitimate chance to have three or four place, if not a couple of champions," Jones said.
