— The proof of progress came at the end of the day.

The Hayden High School wrestling team battled through a series of team duels, losing by a lot to Delta, 60-9, and by a little to Coal Ridge, 33-24, and a good amount to Hotchkiss, 50-22, before beating Pueblo West, 36-24.

Wrestling for fifth place as a team, however, the Tigers beat Coal Ridge in their second try, 30-27.

“I was real proud of their effort all day,” Hayden coach Chad Jones said. “We got beat on by Delta early, but the kids really came back and wrestled very tough. To come back and beat Coal Ridge, that showed some improvement as the day went on.”

The squad was led on Saturday by senior Nick Williams, junior T-Lane Mazzola and freshman Kent Miller.

Miller went 4-0 at 113 pounds while Williams, at 138, and Mazzola at 126, each went 3-1, barely losing in their only loses.

“They gave a good effort and we were wrestling pretty tough competition,” Jones said. “That was good for them.”

The Tigers now turn toward a series of local competitions. The first comes Thursday in Hayden, a quadrangular meet starting at 5:30 p.m. against local rivals Soroco, Steamboat Springs and Meeker.
