Hayden Public Library announced last week the winners of the Bern Giannini Young Reader Award, which recognizes Hayden youths who have frequented the library during the previous year.

Cerra Skufca, Shelby Archuleta, Logan Morrison, Makenna Knez and Keaton Knez were nominated by library staff members and interviewed by friends or family of Bern Giannini, for whom the award is named. Belle Zars and Bernadette Baird-Zars interviewed the youths and asked them about a book that has moved or inspired them.

As part of the award, the winners were given gift cards to Off the Beaten Path Bookstore in Steamboat Springs. The gift cards were donated by friends and family of Giannini as well as the bookstore.

The award, which was established in 2006, was created in memory of Giannini, who lived in Hayden during the summers for most of her adult life and moved to Hayden permanently after she retired. Giannini was a lifelong reader who enjoyed biographies, mysteries, political analysis, humor, novels and just about anything about Western history or John Wesley Powell. She supported the Hayden Public Library and relied on its resources to get her through the long winters.

Giannini also loved talking with children and is remembered for engaging young people in discussions and supporting their interests in reading, including giving books as gifts. After Giannini's death, her family and friends created the award as a way to honor her memory and to make a contribution to Hayden that would align with her passion for reading.

Giannini family and friends felt that by rewarding these young readers with a way to buy books of their own, they could honor Giannini's love of reading and remember her influence on the community of Hayden.
