Hayden girls on a streak

Melinda Mawdsley

Some use the holidays to relax. The Hayden girls basketball team spent its time out of school and practice refocusing.

After opening the season 1-5, the Tigers have won two straight, including Tuesday’s 43-27 victory against rival Soroco.

“We’ve just picked it up,” senior Alycia Boyd said. “After Christmas last year, we picked it up. We know league games start after Christmas.”

Tuesday’s game wasn’t a league contest, but it was a win and a possible preview of the outcome when the two teams meet again Jan. 28 in Hayden for the league game.

The Tigers started January with a 45-21 win against West Grand on Friday.

“We added a new defense at the beginning of the season, and it’s starting to come along,” Hayden coach Jayme Adams said. “We’re breaking the press and showing teams that we can handle the pressure.”

On Tuesday, the Tigers (3-4 overall, 1-0 in league play) outscored the Rams (1-6, 0-1) in transition, passing the ball well to find the open player. Boyd and junior Mariah Doolin combined to score 23 of Hayden’s 43 points. Doolin finished with 12, getting most of senior Jamie Waugh’s minutes while the senior was out after getting her wisdom teeth pulled.

“Mariah had an excellent game,” Adams said.

Hayden and Soroco played even through most of the first quarter before junior Sara Sumerlin converted a three-point play, giving the Tigers a 9-4 lead at the end of the first.

Senior Kim Medvesk followed Sumerlin with another three-point play in the opening seconds of the second quarter. The Tigers built as much as a 13-point lead in the first half, scoring easy baskets in transition.

Soroco came out with increased defensive pressure in the second half and closed Hayden’s lead to nine early in the third. Rams senior guard Paige Iacovetto, who finished with a game-high 15 points, scored four early in the quarter, and senior Lindsay Ellis added a free throw to narrow the gap to 22-14.

Hayden went on an 11-7 run to close out the third quarter, however, and regained a 33-21 lead. The Tigers put the game away early in the fourth, going on a quick 6-0 run to start the quarter, establishing an 18-point lead before winning by 16.

Hayden’s next game is at 6:30 p.m. Friday against North Park in Hayden. Soroco will face Grand Valley at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Oak Creek.
