Steamboat Springs — The Hayden High School girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, falling to Olathe, 40-31.
Olathe came into the game with a No. 4 preseason ranking in Class 3A, but that didn't lessen the blow for Hayden coach Eric Hamilton.
"It was a lot of turnovers, and we didn't shoot the ball that well," he said. "I don't think they beat us; we just really beat ourselves."
The game was back and forth for most of the night.
The Pirates took a 20-17 lead at halftime and a 27-22 lead at the end of three quarters. Olathe led by as many as 10 in the fourth before Hayden hit a run.
With two minutes left, Hayden (4-1) took a one-point lead. Olathe answered with a basket and a free throw to take a two-point lead. From there, the Pirates hit their free throws, and the Tigers couldn't get anything going offensively.

"We did make a comeback there," said Hamilton, who commended Kyra Rolando's defensive effort for helping get the Tigers back in the game. "We had every chance to win the ball game, we just need to convert it. Down the stretch, we need to convert it."
Erin Koehler led the way for the Tigers with 11 points, and Aubree Haskins added 7.
Hayden next plays at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home against North Park.
