Hayden girls hoops closes out 2010 with big win

Hayden's Kyra Rolando and Brette Frentress close in on North Park's Aspin Sanchez on Friday en route to a 73-28 victory. Hayden got a turnover on the play when Sanchez couldn't get rid of the ball or break free in five seconds. The Tigers trounced the Wildcats with an intense defense, expanding their lead throughout the game.

— The Hayden High School girls basketball team slammed on the accelerator early Friday in a home showdown against North Park. That it wasn't going to be a competitive game seemed clear early.

Still, midway through the second quarter, the Wildcats had pulled within 10 points.

The Tigers just smashed the gas again, however, and after a few more minutes, the game was well on it's way to being a rout.

Hayden won in the end, wrapping up the 2010 portion of its schedule with a 73-28 victory.

"We wanted to come back tonight and have a little fun going into that big long break," Hayden coach Eric Hamilton said. "They played well and it was a great way to get into the break."

Hayden amassed such a large advantage by pulling in scoring from all corners.

Senior Kyra Rolando led the way with 14 points, but classmate Delanie VeDepo, who had 13 and junior Aubree Haskins with 10, joined her in double figures. By the end, 11 Tigers contributed.

The team kept expanding the lead thanks not only to the all-hands offensive philosophy. Hayden scored basket after basket after scooping up turnovers from a Wildcat squad that often was unable to handle the Tigers' intense pressure.

A full-course defense led to many easy points.

"We have a lot more heart this year for defense," VeDepo said. "We work together a lot, talk a lot and really go all out. We definitely like to have fun out there."

The team returns to action Jan. 4 with a road trip to Basalt.
