Hayden girls can’t overcome shutout 1st quarter in loss

— Hayden High School girls basketball answered Plateau Valley’s height Friday night. They scored with the Cowboys point-for-point for three quarters. The Tigers even had three players score in double figures.

But a dreadfully slow start proved to be too much for Hayden to overcome.

Plateau Valley jumped out to a 7-0 start after the first quarter and held on as the Tigers crawled back into it, beating Hayden 49-44.

“Our first quarter killed us,” Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie said. “We didn’t even score first quarter, and had we done that, there it is right there. We came back and played a great three quarters. We sucked it up and did what we had to do.”

Hayden narrowed the gap at halftime, trailing 17-15. Heading into the fourth quarter, Plateau Valley held a 36-31 advantage, which proved to be just enough.

Consistent all season, Hayden’s Kara Cozzens again led the Tigers in scoring with 11 points. Chancey Graham and Taylor Hagar each added 10.

The loss dropped Hayden to 5-10 on the season and 1-6 in 2A/1A Western Slope League play, but the Tigers’ fight-back attitude Friday night pleased Wilkie enough to bury the loss and move on.

“I was so proud of them,” Wilkie said.

Hayden travels to De Beque on Saturday afternoon.
