Hayden girls beat Cedaredge, 56-37, at tournament

— There are good ways to open the season and there are great ways, and Thursday night the Hayden High School girls basketball team and senior post Erin Koehler definitely went right through good and all the way to great.

The Tigers beat Cedaredge, 56-37, in the opening round of the Meeker tournament. Koehler led the way, scoring a jaw-dropping 35 points to open her senior campaign with a bang.

"I was very proud of them, very proud of the girls," Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie said. "They worked so well together. They played as a team, and it worked."

Wilkie was quick to point across her roster for players who had good games. Aubree Haskins scored six points in Hayden's 19-point first quarter that set the tone for the game. Brette Frentress

helped there, as well, and was strong throughout the game along with Olivia Zehner, Savannah Williams and Kelsey Rolando.

Koehler was the showstopper, though. She had 10 in the first quarter and 11 in the second. She scored only four in the third as she and Haskins had to hit the bench with foul trouble.

Cedaredge took advantage and rebounded to cut a 20-point halftime deficit to nine. The Tigers roared again, however. Koehler had 10 more points in the fourth quarter, and Hayden outscored Cedaredge by 10 the rest of the way.

"It was exciting," Wilkie said. "They all contributed. They all played very well, and I was proud."

Hayden returns to the court with a 6 p.m. showdown Friday in Meeker against Palisade.
