Hayden girls basketball wrap up Meeker title
December 3, 2011
What already was a good weekend for the Hayden High School girls basketball team became great Saturday as the team wrapped up the championship of a season-opening tournament in Meeker.
The Tigers surged in the fourth quarter to beat Grand Valley, 50-40.
"I'm thrilled," Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie said. "The kids came in with a new coach and new expectations and weren't really sure how things were going to go, and they have just showed whatever adversity comes their way, they can capitalize on it."
For the third consecutive game, the Tigers found a little different way to win. Their powerful forwards and seniors still were key: Erin Koehler had 14 points, Aubree Haskins had 10 and Brette Frentress added 9. Savannah Williams helped tip the scales with her best game of the young season, scoring 10.
Kelsey Rolando, meanwhile, added a pair of 3-point shots for 6 points.
"They all have to contribute," Wilkie said. "When we get into games like that, if someone is shutting down Aubree or Erin, everyone else has to do their job, and that's what happened in this game. It was wonderful."
Hayden used an 11-3 fourth quarter to pull away in what had been a tight game. The Tigers, 3-0, return to action Thursday at home against Vail Christian.
