Hayden girls basketball squad’s struggles continue with loss to Hotchkiss
January 18, 2013
Steamboat Springs — Two of the conference's best teams on the schedule in one weekend wasn't exactly the medicine the Hayden High School girls basketball was yearning for, but Tigers coach Michelle Wilkie said her struggling squad is trying to make the most of it.
On Friday night, she said the team adapted well on defense and handled a tough full-court press with composure.
A ghastly night shooting the ball kept Hayden from making a game of it, however, and the Tigers fell, 56-19.
"We were taking great shots, but we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn," Wilkie said. "We could not buy a basket."
Savannah Williams led the team with seven points. Kara Cozzens scored six.
It won't get any easier Saturday against Paonia, one of the state's top teams.
Wilkie said the squad will continue to work for improvement by focusing on one goal at a time.
