Hayden girls basketball picks up win

Luke Graham

— The Hayden High School girls basketball team picked up its first win of the year Tuesday, easily beating De Beque, 52-18.

Hayden now turns its focus to a cross-county matchup with Soroco on Dec. 20. The two teams will play in Oak Creek.

“We’ll take the rest of this week and next week and work on what we need to do against Soroco,” Tigers coach Michelle Wilkie said.

Hayden wasn’t challenged much Tuesday, allowing the team to work on each aspect of its game.

Grace Wilkie led the Tigers with 12 points.

Laura Johnson, Olivia Zehner, Taylor Hagar and Makenzie Fry each had six.

Chancey Graham and Kara Cozzens each had four.

“I think (against Soroco), of course, we need to keep our turnovers down,” Wilkie said. “Everybody needs to contribute when they are in, and we have to play good defense. We have to push the ball up the floor every chance we get.”
