April 7, 2014
Steamboat Springs — The Hayden High School boys track team led the way for Routt County prep athletes at last weekend's Eagle Valley Invitational.
Led by podium finishes from juniors Thomas Rauch and Jack Redmond, the Hayden boys took ninth at the 16-team invitational.
Rauch was the top finisher in the boys high jump, clearing 5 feet, 11 inches for the win. Redmond had a 20-foot-1-inch long jump to grab silver in the event.
The Tigers girls' top-10 finishes at the invitational were in the 4×100-meter relay, finishing in 57.02 seconds for sixth place, and Jessica Hockett's 10th-place finish in the girls triple jump. Hockett was also 12th in the girls discus. Jordan Temple finished 25th in the girls 100-meter dash, and Laura Johnson was 17th in the girls mile.
The Soroco girls team had a few top-10 finishes Saturday, led by sixth-place times from the Rams' 4×200-meter and 4×400-meter relay teams. Hayley Johnson was 10th in the 100-meter dash (13.97 seconds) and Nicole Williams was 10th in discus (77 feet, 5 inches). Cassie Constine took ninth in the girls triple jump, followed by Kali Constine's 4-foot-7-inch high jump to also grab ninth.
On the Soroco boys side, Micah Gibbons' eighth-place finish in discus with a throw of 107 feet, 8 inches was by far the Rams' top performance of the day. Gibbons was also 14th in pole vault. Andrew Herzog took 13th in the 200-meter dash (25.22 seconds) and was 27th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.41 seconds.
Steamboat's boys and girls teams were able to snag just one top-10 finish from the deep Eagle Valley Invitational field, but coach Erik Ramstad said the young and relatively inexperienced group keeps besting its own 2014 individual marks.
"It's been super exciting," Ramstad said. "There were tons of personal bests. It's good to see people continuing to progress. We still have a few people who it was their first meet ever."
Alex Tumminello again led the Sailors’ charge in the 800-meter run, missing her season best by less than two seconds, crossing in 2 minutes, 38.4 seconds.
Steamboat's Meg O'Connell was 14th in the mile with a time of 6 minutes, 23.58 seconds. The boys 4×200-meter relay was 12th, Temsup Techarukpong was 14th in the long jump and Joshua Corbin was 14th in the 200-meter dash.
All three schools will compete in Saturday's Glenwood Springs Demon Invitational. Soroco also will be at the Coal Ridge Invitational on Friday.
