Hayden boys basketball tumbles after ugly start

— The Hayden High School boys basketball team had one of the worst starts to a game any hoops fan is likely to see, falling behind against Meeker in the semifinal round of the Cowboy Shootout, 26-0.

Somehow, that's not the stunning part of the Tigers' Friday night 66-35 loss. They only turned the ball over twice in that first quarter and nine times in the game, meaning they helped add a new depth to the term "ice-cold shooting."

"Meeker got hot, and we couldn't buy a basket," Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. "We played better in spurts through the second, third and fourth quarters, but that first quarter was horrendous."

The loss sets the Tigers against Grand Valley at 2 p.m. Saturday in the tournament's consolation game.

Hayden senior Hunter Johnston led his team in his first game this season, scoring 14 points thanks to four 3-point shots. Mark Doolin added 11.
