Hayden boys basketball places 3rd in Meeker
December 11, 2010
Steamboat Springs — The Hayden High School boys basketball team performed like a snowball on a hill Saturday.
Playing in the consolation game of the Meeker Tournament against the host Cowboys, the Tigers trailed one quarter and led by a few after two. They picked up steam throughout the second half, however, and when things finally were over, Hayden had pocketed a huge win against a tough rival.
Hayden scored 38 second-half points to beat Meeker, 63-50.
"We played a pretty solid game," Hayden coach Mike Luppes said.
The runaway second half came with plenty of gaudy statistics for Hayden's players.
Senior Graig Medvesk again led the team, recording one of the best offensive nights of his career. He finished with 30 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds.

"He just had an outstanding offensive game," Luppes said. "We played well, and he took what they gave us."
Sophomore big man Mark Doolin scored in double figures for the second consecutive night, pouring in 10. He also had eight rebounds.
No one was better on the glass than sophomore Jorge Valdez, however. He scored 6 points and grabbed 17 boards.
"Jorge really played well," Luppes said. "He played well throughout the tournament, but got a lot more aggressive against Meeker. He just did a super job."
Medvesk's performance earned him all-tournament honors, and Ben Williams won the weekend's slam-dunk competition, beating out Doolin, Medvesk and Valdez in the finals.
