Hayden boys basketball knocks off De Beque

Joel Reichenberger

— A handful of familiar faces and one very welcomed new one helped lead the Hayden High School boys basketball team to a 64-36 win on Friday night at De Beque, setting the stage for a big home game at 4 p.m. Saturday against Vail Christian.

Junior Paul Laliberte, playing his first game for the Tigers, led his team with 15 points. Aaron Cramer and Jorge Valdez each added 13, and Mark Doolin scored 10.

Valdez, meanwhile, grabbed 18 rebounds and Hunter Johnston tallied nine assists as Hayden ran up the stats and blew the game open in a decisive second half.

“We came out a little sluggish in the first half, didn’t shoot the ball real well, but in the second, we were much better,” coach Mike Luppes said.

Hayden led by just one after the first quarter and by five at half. A 26-point fourth-quarter surge, combined with a defensive effort that limited De Beque to 21 points after that first quarter, proved enough to earn a comfortable win.
