Hayden boys basketball is set for Meeker Tournament

Luke Graham

— The Hayden High School boys basketball team opens its season today, traveling to the Meeker Tournament.

The Tigers, who are one of the last area teams to get started, will be working in three new starters and a whole bunch of bench players. Only seniors Graig Medvesk and Ben Williams return from last year’s team.

Hayden plays at 4:30 p.m. today against Mancos.

“Obviously we want to get our first-game jitters out of the way,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. “We’ve been practicing for a long time. We’re anxious to get going and get the season started.”

Outside of a couple of scrimmages with Steamboat Springs and Moffat County, today will be Hayden’s first game action.

Luppes said he will use the tournament to gauge where his team is at, especially with so many new players.

“There are a lot of question marks out there,” he said. “We hope to start getting some answers for those.”
